A naïs Nin was quoted as saying that “the role of a writer is not to say what we can all say, but what we are unable to say,” to which I would add, “or what we are unwilling to say.” I will now say what others are unwilling to say. Bryan Hutchinson has gone off the deep-end. In his post 4 Most Famous, Cool, Successful, Bad Bad Girls of ADHD! And Another Myth Debunked, he provides four female role models who disprove “the myth that you can’t have ADHD and be famous.” I don’t know who claimed that you can’t be both famous and ADHD but, putting that issue aside, let’s look at the role models our daughters should emulate. [note 1]

  • Paris Hilton: Perhaps Bryan is unfamiliar with the Paris Hilton sex tapes or that Ms. Hilton spent some time in jail. I recommend that he use the power of Google before saying anything else about Ms. Hilton’s virtues.
  • Britney Spears: Is it possible that Bryan didn’t know that this paragon of virtue and former Mouseketeer was married for 55 hours and was quite a party-girl, enjoying all the fun drugs an ADHD role model should enjoy? Perhaps he can Google britney spears drugs.
  • Miley Cyrus: If her father wasn’t Billy Ray Cyrus, would she be famous? Maybe. Maybe not. But having a daddy with connections never hurt anyone, ADHD or not.
  • Lindsay Lohan: Really Bryan? Do you think it is her cocaine or alcohol abuse that young women should be emulating?

The Bottom Line

As the father of two daughters, one of whom participated in a recent Slut Walk, and the other (okay, both of them) who takes every opportunity to point out how this is still a male-dominated world, I have a good sense as to what the world looks like through their eyes. Whether they have ADHD or not is, quite honestly, not the point. The point is that these four women that Mr. Hutchinson has held up as models of success and ADHD are exactly the types of role model that every woman should be running away from. If young women need role models (let’s face it…we all need role models), they could look to Elizabeth Warren, Alice Walker, Jane Goodall, and, in the case of my daughters, they can look to their own mother. She works in one of the worst neighborhoods in New York and, despite all odds, has successfully turned around a failing school. Now these are role models worth emulating.

  1. In the past, I have claimed that you are not likely to be famous BECAUSE you have ADHD but that does not mean you cannot have fame and ADHD.

Thank you.  Thank you very much.

    • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

You’re welcome. I reached my Popeye moment with Bryan: “That’s all I can stands and I can’t stands no more.” And I do owe him a “thank you.” He provided material for my three most recent posts.

      • Anonymous

Yep Jeff, I had that “That’s all I can stands and I can’t stands no more.” Popeye moment awhile back that had to do with him obviously using the same words that I said in a comment on a different blog that dealt with the same subject he posted on his blog a day later. It was no surprise to my friend that owns that other blog, that Bryan got the idea for his post from her blog post. It’s also no surprise to see these words>”So, pass the word, the myth that you can’t have ADHD and be famous and successful is debunked!” in his recent post, 4 Most Famous, Cool, Successful, Bad Bad Girls of ADHD! And Another Myth Debunked. We know he was referring to one of your posts here on “Jeff’s ADD Mind”. And I know that he knows damn good and well, that was not the message that was intended in your post. He does not have the balls to give the link to that post. At least you give the link to his posts so people can see it. Oh well, I guess I will go puke now from reading his most recent posts.;)

Nothing I can really add. You’ve said it all.

        • Betsy Davenport

Here I am, reading and writing to two of my favorite (maybe my most favorite) men with ADHD.  Part of what makes me like you both so well is that you say what you mean, even if it has the chance of bugging someone else.  Of course, in this case, more internet references to Bryan’s blog probably suits him just fine.  He is like that.  Bad is good, because it’s better than none.  I get the idea he likes to get under people’s skin, to provoke.  Which is so very ADD in its stimulative properties, it makes one wonder if his meds are adjusted properly.

Jeff, I forgot to say before how much I loved what you said about your wife.  Admiring and respectful.  You’re a good man.

          • Anonymous

Thanks Betsy! I try to respect people as much or even more than they respect me. But this last post by Bryan went over the line of respect for his non-respect to my friend Jeff. As I pointed out already, Bryan did intend to do that, and the evidence of that is not in question. Bryan knows that we know this. But the sad thing about it all is, Bryan is a likable guy, and I take no pleasure in losing his friendship in this way. And I can only assume that I will lose the friendship of some of the people that I met over there when I participated in some discussions over the years. But I will not change my mind or ignore the facts that prove beyond a doubt, that ADHD is not a “gift” or makes a person better, smarter, more attractive, more creative, etc, etc, etc,.  And those ADHD “gifts” are exactly the MYTH’S that Bryan intends to promote and influence people to believe over there. And I will admit that it makes me very angry at him when I think about these things. (He’s not worried about that, because he knows that I am a nobody compared to him).

            • Betsy Davenport

Well, in that way he is like any huckster — selling something of no value to the gullible.  It is a kind of using, and I don’t like it.  I’ve wanted to erase my contributions over there but don’t know how.

              • Anonymous

I’m not sure if I know how to erase anything I ever did over there either Betsy. And as far as I know, I am still a “member” there. But I don’t want to erase stuff I said or did there for the same reason I don’t want Jeff to erase any of things I said here over the years. I can look back and see some of the things I said and laugh at myself and also see how much I have improved by being here @ Jeff’s ADD Mind. As for Bryans blog, I can look back and see that I was not so much different than other people that were wanting to believe that ADHD gave me special unique qualities that non-ADHDers could not have. But I learned and am still learning that ADHD has no benefits. And it will control me if I let it tell me that it does.

            • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

Scott, the funny thing is…I didn’t see his post as a swipe at me but, perhaps, being embroiled in it all, I couldn’t see what it looks like from the outside.

You might want to rethink your definition of “likable guy.” A likable guy is someone who you can have a beer with, maybe get into a heated argument with him and still be friends at the end. Neither of you are looking to “score points,” to make yourself look better than the other.

              • Anonymous

Jeff, I might be wrong about his “can’t have ADHD and be famous and successful is a myth debunked” being a swipe at you in a personal way. And I said what I think about Bryan without him being here to explain to me what he thinks may have happened to cause my anger. I went against my own personal feelings about saying bad things about a person, just to vent my own frustration, which may hurt someone and help nobody.

                • Anonymous

Well, it helped me. I like knowing when at least a couple of people share my opinion and are willing to call a spade a spade. It mitigates the loneliness.

                  • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

Absolutely agreed! That’s the power of the internet. We find, for better or worse (and that’s a different discussion), other people that are like us. One could make a good argument that the ADHD community would not have grown as large as it is if not for the internet. And you, me, Scott, Gina, Katy, and so many others, would not have become friends if not for the internet.

                    • Anonymous

Yes that’s a fact and what has been and still is one of best things that has ever happened to me. Becoming a friend with Y’all! Your names are well known to all of my close family members here at home. Particualy my wife, who has seen the improvement of my way of dealing with life. So much so, that she bought me this laptop.

That’s a difference between us. I have no problem saying bad things about a person…when that person deserves it. ;)

                  • Anonymous

Jeff, oh yes “when that person deserves it.” is when I feel the need to say what I think about that “person”. I just don’t want to cross the line between opinion and personal attack by using certain words to describe that person. The kind of words that my mom would have grabbed a bar of soap and stuffed it my mouth for saying. ;)

                      Woops, like what EYE said.

Ok laptops are on their way now! They are scheduled to arrive the day I complete the every project listed on my coffee stained, faded and wrinkled “Honey do” list. I just need to find it first. I think I used it as a bookmark in my “How To Remember Where…..um I can’t remember the name of that book or where it is. I’m sure I can find it now, but I really should wait until tomorrow because I need to finish reading “A Cure For Procrastination” if I can remember where I put that book. Oh nevermind I’m gonna eat that half of a stale cookie under the flashlight without batteries in it sittin’ on my coffee table and call it a night. ;)

      • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

A brilliant response that could only have been done with the help of Jeff and Betsy. So, as soon as you complete your Honey-Do List, let us know when we can expect the laptops. ;)

So brilliant I couldn’t have done it myself. Only had I influenced its originator could such an idea have been born. Mine needs at least 80 G storage.

Clearly for these woman ADD has been a curse. (Maybe not Miley). As for role models Yikes! I hope not. My 15 YO DD better not think so.  The myth that you can’t have ADHD and be famous, never heard of it. Clearly absurd as we can all name lot’s of well known people that have or had ADHD (diagnosed or not)
Brian supports these girls because they have ADHD not that they are good people. That’s his prerogative.
I tend to go with MLK’s “content of character” standard. I have known lot’s of complete A** holes that I’m sure their ADHD was a major cause. That was not an excuse for treating me like s**t. I’m pretty sure there are people out there that might say that about me or you. LOL.

The fact that you and Brian have opposing takes on ADHD provides a healthy discussion for those of us somewhere in the middle. Keep up the good work.

“The fact that you and Brian have opposing takes on ADHD provides a healthy
discussion for those of us somewhere in the middle.” – Hmmm…where’s “the middle”? What, exactly, does that look like? Though I had seen ADHD as an unmitigated curse, once I moved beyond that I see it as neither blessing or curse but simply something to be dealt with…kind of like dealing with the lack of hair on my head. It’s neither good nor bad…it just “is.”

I don’t think that a middle can exist. Is there a “middle” to diabetes? A middle to bipolar disorder? What about depression? I think the concept of “a middle” is the way we avoid conflict but there are times when there is no middle. Though ADHD doesn’t have to be seen as a curse, neither does it have to be seen as a blessing. It just “is.” It’s neutral.

      • Anonymous

“I see it as neither blessing or curse but simply something to be dealt with”  From the outside looking in it seems you do see it as, if not a curse, than a completely bad thing. Where Brian tries to paint it in the best light he can.

I think the middle has to do with attitude. For many I am a curmudgeon even though I don’t usually think I am. (what do I know). Your facebook icon of Walter must indicate somewhat how you feel or you wouldn’t use it.

Brian takes a positive approach that allows him and may help others to be happier or less depressed.

You choose to see it as neutral but write in a negative tone, sometimes depressive. He writes in a positive tone sometimes to the point of treakle.

If finding positives makes you think he has gone off the deep-end than what abyss does that put you in?

As in most things in life I find my middle where I’m trying to make the best of a shitty situation. I prefer to try to see the bright side while being cognizant that things could turn to shit at any moment.  My latest blog post - Stillpower: “What can we do to clear our minds in order to be more productive?” http://addsherpa.com/2012/06/stillpower-what-can-we-do-to-clear-our-minds-in-order-to-be-more-productive/ is an interesting take on one way to get things done. Will it work for everyone? Of course not, nothing will, but if it works for someone than it beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. That’s all I’m trying to say.

I guess I look at it as you are both trying to help others in a way that you think best, as am I, and that alone is a good thing.

As you said, you wrote 3 blog posts because of him. That’s good.

Now I have to comment on your rant blog with my own rant. LOL

        • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

I think we’re getting into the “how many pins dance on the head of an angel?” type of argument. There is no right answer since, at bottom, we’re arguing about opinion and, as they say in Yiddish, de gustibus non est disputandem.

“If finding positives…” – We should stick with the main point which is that at least three of the women he held up as offering something positive is seen, by the reality-based world, as offering nothing positive at all, except, perhaps, that one should positively not emulate them.

Again…a middle position is, in some cases, no position at all.

  • John.h

What are you talking about, jeff? The article you linked to is nothing close to the way you describe it.

    • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

“The article you linked to is nothing close to the way you describe it.” – So I assume you told your daughter (or niece) to look to Lindsay Lohan as a model of how to wear your ADHD in public? Of how to become wealthy? Perhaps you should get the latest issue of ADDitude Magazine where women with ADHD who have amazing careers, managed to do it without having to resort to drugs or home-made porn. Look, I’m not the one who tried to find the “positive” in the miserable, public lives of the women that were highlighted by Mr. Hutchinson. I’m just pointing out what no one has the guts to say, namely, that one must truly have Adult Delusional Disorder in order to put forth those four women as offering examples we can learn from. What exactly are we learning? That a slinky body, a video, and a well-recognized name will get you whatever you want? Please, enough defending the indefensible. You cannot be a parent and look at his post and think, “Wow! Can’t wait to show this to my kids!”

      • John.h

Jeff,  I teach my kids not to lie and that there are admirable qualities in everybody, including those who make mistakes. Do you teach your kids to lie by example? You must be a good parent. Judging by other articles I have read here in the last hour fabrication is common place on your blog.

        • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

If you mean “fabrication” in the sense of “making things,” then you are absolutely correct. I fabricate many things. ;)

I’ve been reading your blog, but this is the first time I commented. This is awesome because I was just censored on Bryan’s site ADDerworld. I posted in the forum that I didn’t think ADHD was a gift and proceeded to post a video where Dr. Russell Bradley talks about the dangers in saying that ADHD is a gift. Bryan wrote a long reply to my discussion post and then deleted it from the site! I will probably be suspended too like I see was RG’s fate. This sunshine and light attitude of Bryan Hutchinson is nauseating! You have a great blog and I’m inspired to create my own!

    • http://jeffsaddmind.com Jeffs ADD Mind

I think the “sunshine and light” theory of ADHD can become as tiresome, and as counter-productive, as my old ADHD-is-a-curse theory. Thankfully I’ve moved past that. I no longer see it as a curse, nor do I see it as sunshine and light. I like the “mosquito” metaphor. Like a mosquito, my ADHD is always buzzing around and sometimes it gets a good bite out of me. But I swat at it and move on in life and, some days, it never bites at all (or so it seems). The bottom line is that all of us — you, me, and even Bryan — have more to offer the world than our “ailments.” We are not simply our ADHD.

      And welcome to the blog!
